How To Start Living A Holistic Life

How to Start Living a   Holistic Lifestyle

I've been living a holistic lifestyle for the last 13 years but I didn’t wake up one morning and decide, “Today I’ll start living a holistic life.” For me, it happened gradually — at the age of 40, I found myself struggling with anorexia, physically ill and anaemic, and stuck in a stressful job that just wasn’t for me. I knew something had to change.

Two things set me on my holistic journey. A colleague of mine, who was a Reiki master, introduced me to Reiki, and she also gave me a book by Lorna Byrne called Stairways to Heaven. Lorna sees angels, and in the book, she encourages readers to ask angels for help. I knew nothing about angels, and I knew nothing about Reiki, but I started asking for help and went for a Reiki session. From that moment, everything began to shift.

What Does “Holistic” Really Mean?

The word “holistic” comes from the Greek word holos, meaning “whole” or “entire.” It emphasises looking at the whole person, rather than just individual parts — body, mind, and spirit — and how these aspects are interconnected.

Living holistically means making choices that support balance and wellbeing in all areas of life. It’s about:

  • Nurturing your body through natural foods, movement, and self-care

  • Caring for your mind with mindfulness, meditation, and positive mindset practices

  • Honouring your spirit with intention, rituals, and connection to nature or higher guidance

In essence, a holistic lifestyle focuses on integration and harmony, rather than treating symptoms in isolation. It encourages awareness of how your choices, environment, and habits affect your overall wellbeing — helping you live more intentionally, healthily, and aligned with yourself.

I like to think of it this way: we are physical, emotional, energetic, mental, and spiritual beings, and a holistic lifestyle looks after all of these aspects.

Beginning Your Holistic Journey

The start of my journey looked like this: first, a realisation that something had to change. If I continued living the way I was, the outlook wasn’t happy, healthy, or positive. Perhaps you’re at a stage where you feel the same?

Secondly, I believe that when you recognise something needs to change and begin to ask for help, the universe will guide you. I was divinely guided to try Reiki, and from there, the path opened up.

You might notice small nudges in your own life — an urge to try a new hobby, a book recommendation, or the presence of a teacher or mentor that resonates with you. Notice what excites or interests you, and follow it.

I also realised that transformation starts within. I began to change my internal narrative — practising positive self-talk, setting intentions, and actively working toward a healthier mindset. Over time, this reshaped how I viewed myself, my choices, and my life.

Practical Steps I Took

  • I prioritised self-care: regular massages and reflexology sessions helped me reconnect with my body.

  • I made dietary changes gradually — cutting out caffeine, then alcohol, and later transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle. These choices felt right for me, though a holistic lifestyle doesn’t require everyone to do the same.

  • I began to change my internal narrative, practicing positive self-talk and actively working towards a healthier mindset. Over time, this reshaped how I viewed myself, my choices, and my life.

  • I began a spiritual practice, including meditation, affirmations, and connecting with my intuition. This helped me develop inner clarity, calm, and a sense of guidance.

  • I became mindful of what I put on my skin and in my home. Growing Louisa B Apothecary, I became acutely aware of the toxins in everyday products, and choosing natural alternatives became a key part of my journey.

5 Top Tips for Starting a Holistic Lifestyle

1. Start with Mindful Self-Care
Prioritise daily practices that nurture your body, mind, and spirit. A short meditation, mindful breathing, or a ritual with natural products like bath salts, candles, or aromatherapy roll-ons can help you slow down and be present.

2. Choose Natural Products
Swap synthetic products for natural alternatives — skincare, cleaning products, or personal care items. This reduces exposure to toxins and supports both your health and the environment.

3. Nourish Your Body with Whole Foods
Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, herbs, and natural supplements to support energy, balance, and overall wellbeing.

4. Connect with Nature
Spend time outdoors regularly, even if it’s a short walk. Nature calms the nervous system, grounds you, and reconnects you with cycles like the seasons and the moon phases.

5. Cultivate a Spiritual Practice
Nurture your connection to yourself and the universe through a spiritual practice that resonates with you. This could include meditation, prayer, affirmations, energy work, or connecting with nature. Regular practice helps you become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and energy, supporting balance and alignment in your holistic lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

A holistic lifestyle is deeply personal — there’s no “one right way.” Start small, notice what resonates, and gradually build a life that nurtures your body, mind, and spirit. Over time, the small, mindful choices you make each day create lasting balance, wellbeing, and alignment.

Remember, your inner world shapes your outer reality. By caring for your thoughts, energy, and spiritual connection alongside your physical health, you set the foundation for a truly holistic life.
