Why Wellbeing Is Simpler (And Cheaper) Than You Think

Scroll through Instagram for five minutes and you'd think wellbeing was something you have to buy — a £40 supplement, the latest superfood powder, a skincare routine with twelve steps and a price tag to match. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with supplements, I've taken them myself. But while I was at the Colibri Spirit Festival in Corfu this year, I went to a talk about longevity, and the panel — which included doctors — all said that taking care of our holistic health can come from simple things, which I've listed below. These things aren't talked about that much, as some of them are hard to make money from!
So let's take a look at some of the most powerful things you can do for your wellbeing most of them cost absolutely nothing.
1. Get outside
Get your feet in the sea if you're near one, or simply get onto the ground — barefoot on grass, hands in soil, a walk among trees. There's something in being properly outside, away from screens and walls, that settles the nervous system in a way very little else does. It doesn't need to be a big trip. Ten minutes in a local park counts.
2. Real connection
Not the scrolling kind — the kind where you sit with a friend you can properly put the world to rights with. The friends who know the real version of you, who you don't have to perform for. That kind of connection is protective for both your mental and physical health, and it costs nothing but time. My oldest friend and myself often go for walks together, we both say that these little outings are a godsend!
3. Real food
Skip the processed stuff where you can, and lean into good, homemade, organic-where-possible food instead. A simple rule of thumb: check the ingredients list. If it reads like a chemistry set — long words you don't recognise and can't pronounce — put it back and choose something simpler instead.
4. What you put on your skin
We think a lot about what we eat, but far less about what we put on our bodies — and it adds up. The average woman uses around 12 personal care products a day, and depending on the products, that can mean well over 100 different chemical ingredients touching her skin before she's even left the house. Choosing natural, simpler skincare — fewer ingredients, ones you can actually recognise — is a small switch that adds up over time. This is where I come in!! 5. Move your body
If you know me you know I'm a lover of living heavy weights and Pilates. I don't always want to go to the gym, if I'm honest. But every single time I do, I come out feeling completely different to how I went in. Movement doesn't need to be complicated or expensive; it's simply about showing up for yourself, even when you don't feel like it.
Strength work in particular matters more than people realise, especially as we get older. Muscle isn't just about how you look — it protects your joints, supports your bones, keeps your metabolism healthier, and makes everyday life easier as the years go on. You don't need a gym membership to move more, either — walking, stretching, bodyweight exercises at home, yoga or a Pilates all count.
A couple more, while we're at it
Sleep — properly prioritising it, not just getting by on six hours and coffee. It's free, and it's foundational to almost everything else on this list.
Sunlight — particularly first thing in the morning, even on a grey day. It helps regulate your body clock and your mood.
Breath — a few minutes of slow, deliberate breathing costs nothing and can shift your whole nervous system state in real time.
So there we have it plenty of ways to help improve your overall wellbeing in simple ways, which one will you try today?
