5 Signs Your Nervous System Needs Support Right Now

We live in a world that moves fast, demands a lot and rarely gives us permission to stop. And over time — slowly, quietly — the weight of it all begins to show up in our bodies.
Not always as a dramatic breakdown. Often as something much subtler. A tiredness that sleep doesn't fix. A mind that won't switch off. A feeling of being permanently braced for something, even when everything is fine.
This is your nervous system talking. And it's worth listening.
Your nervous system is the communication network of your entire body — regulating everything from your heart rate and digestion to your mood, your sleep and your ability to feel safe and connected. When it's healthy and balanced, life feels manageable, even joyful. When it's dysregulated — stuck in a state of chronic stress or shutdown — everything feels harder than it should.
Here are five signs that your nervous system may be asking for a little more support right now.
1. YOU FEEL TIRED BUT WIRED
You're exhausted — genuinely, deeply tired — and yet when you lie down to sleep your mind starts racing. You replay conversations, run through tomorrow's to-do list, catastrophise about things that haven't happened yet. You can't switch off no matter how much you want to.
This is one of the most common signs of a dysregulated nervous system. When the body is in a prolonged stress response, cortisol — your primary stress hormone — stays elevated. And elevated cortisol at night makes restful sleep almost impossible, no matter how exhausted you are.
Your body is tired. But your nervous system doesn't feel safe enough to rest.
What helps: A consistent wind-down ritual that signals safety to the body. Dim lights an hour before bed, no screens, a warm bath, an aromatherapy candle, gentle breathwork. You are teaching your nervous system that the day is over and it is safe to let go.
2. YOU FEEL IRRITABLE, REACTIVE OR EMOTIONALLY OVERWHELMED
Small things feel enormous. You snap at the people you love. You cry at things that wouldn't normally touch you, or feel a simmering frustration just beneath the surface that you can't quite explain.
When the nervous system is dysregulated, our window of tolerance — the range within which we can manage life's ups and downs without becoming overwhelmed — shrinks. Things that would ordinarily roll off us land heavily. Our responses feel out of proportion because our system is already running on full.
This isn't weakness. This is a body that has been carrying too much for too long.
What helps: Slowing down before you react. Three deep breaths. A walk outside. Gentle movement that releases the energy stored in the body. And compassion for yourself — because a reactive nervous system is not a character flaw. It's a signal.
3. YOU FEEL DISCONNECTED FROM YOURSELF
You go through the motions of your day but feel strangely absent from it — like you're watching your life from behind glass. You struggle to feel joy, even in the things you used to love. You feel numb, flat or simply hollow.
This is the nervous system's shutdown response — a protective mechanism that kicks in when the system has been overwhelmed for too long. Rather than staying in fight or flight, the body moves into a kind of freeze state. It conserves energy. It disconnects.
It can feel like depression. It can feel like losing yourself. And it is one of the most important signs that your nervous system needs gentle, consistent support.
What helps: Reconnecting with the body through sensation. A warm bath. Holding a crystal in your hands and noticing its weight and texture. Slow, mindful movement. Anything that brings you back into the present moment and into your physical self.
4. YOUR DIGESTION IS SUFFERING
This one surprises people — but the gut and the nervous system are intimately connected. In fact, the gut is sometimes called the second brain, containing millions of nerve cells that communicate constantly with the brain via the vagus nerve.
When we are in a chronic stress state, digestion is one of the first things to suffer. Bloating, cramping, irregular bowel movements, nausea, loss of appetite or stress eating — these can all be signs that the nervous system is dysregulated and the digestive system is paying the price.
If you've been struggling with your digestion and can't find a physical cause, it's worth asking: what is my stress level doing to my gut?
What helps: Eating slowly and mindfully, away from screens. Warm, nourishing foods. Herbal teas — chamomile, ginger, peppermint. Breathing deeply before meals to activate the parasympathetic nervous system — your rest and digest state — before you eat.
5. YOU FEEL PERMANENTLY BRACED — LIKE YOU'RE WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO GO WRONG
A low level hum of anxiety that never quite goes away. Shoulders that live up around your ears. A jaw that's permanently clenched. A feeling of dread that has no specific object — just a general sense that something is wrong, or about to be.
This is hypervigilance — a nervous system that has been in threat-detection mode for so long that it has forgotten what safety feels like. It scans constantly for danger, even when there is none. It keeps the body braced, tight and ready.
Over time this level of chronic tension takes an enormous toll — on our energy, our health, our relationships and our joy.
What helps: Slowly, gently teaching the body what safety feels like. This takes time and consistency. Meditation. Yoga Nidra. Time in nature. Massage. Flower essences. Energy healing. The practices that speak directly to the nervous system rather than the thinking mind.
SO WHAT NOW?
If you recognised yourself in any — or all — of these signs, please know this: there is nothing wrong with you. You are a human being living in a demanding world, doing your best. And your nervous system is simply trying to protect you.
But you don't have to stay here.
The body knows how to heal. It knows how to find its way back to balance, to ease, to safety. It just needs the right support, consistency and a little bit of patience.
Begin with the small things. The breath. The walk. The warm bath. The moment of stillness before the day begins. These are not indulgences — they are medicine.
